HOW THE DEFECTIVE NORDYNE ACOIL DESIGN DAMAGES YOUR HOME

Nordyne, if you dispute the information contained on this page, you know how to contact me. We have had several discussions about how your unit's design could not be the cause of my problem. Well, after consulting with three air conditioning professionals, they explained to me why the design will always cause the type of problem which I am having --- and it is the same one that hundreds (maybe thousands) of others have given up on getting corrected. The problem is, that while they are quitters, I am not. When you insult my intelligence by accusing me of not maintaining the unit properly, or saying that no one else has had this problem, you picked on the wrong person.

To everyone else, please pay attention!

My home has twice caught fire because of this defective design. Water and electricity do not mix!!! Not only is this a fire hazard, but if the problem becomes so bad that water has leaked onto your floor, you or your children could be electrocuted. Further, contact with the metal parts of the housing could also result in electrocution even if you do not see the water. Electricity will always take the path to ground. If that path is through you, that is where it will go.

DON'T THINK THAT YOU ARE ALONE!

Have you had problems with water flowing from your Nordyne or Intertherm Airconditioning unit? Have you tried to get it fixed by the company and failed to get satisfaction? Well, at this point, I am consulting with an attorney to decide whether to pursue legal action against this dangerous product. A "CLASS ACTION" would probably benefit all of us, or at least put an end to this company's lack of concern for the consumer.

This is a simple illustration of the design defect in this product.

After the unit starts, and the compressor is working, condensation occurs on the fins of the coil. As the result of gravity, the moisture will collect at the lowest point. This is great in an UPDRAFT configuration, which is exactly the opposite of the configuration of this unit.

As the moisture collects on the fins, surface tension should keep it moving along the surface of the fin. However, when we introduce airflow of sufficient volume (such as that of an air conditioner blower motor) the airflow breaks the surface tension of the water.

This is why there is an abundance of water in your ductwork under these units.

Once the surface tension is broken, then once again gravity takes over, aided by the air flow which broke the bond in the first place.

Now the water is in freefall and goes directly into the blower motor --- sometimes damaging the electrical motor --- and shortening the life of the motor. Since the blower is open on the same side that has the electrical junction box, the water which actually contacts the blades of the blower are splashed onto the electrical connections.

The severity of the splashing is directly proportional to the atmosphere's moisture content, commonly called "humidity." In the south we have plenty. So, can you guess where Nordyne sells these units? In the south, of course!

But this page is about more than just complaining. So, let's get on to the business of offering a solution to the design flaw.

The best way to take care of the problem would be to convert the system to an UPDRAFT style system by placing the blower ABOVE the Acoil. This reduces the likelyhood of water getting into the blower.

In most mobile homes there is more than enough space to accomodate this upgrade. There are, however, problems with this solution:

1. Nordyne's unit lasts longer, making it less likely that you will need to purchase as many central air units over the life of your trailer.

2. The cost (although small) is not offset by increased sales.

3. They don't get to laugh at us "trailer trash" folks (yes, that is how they talked to me) when we can't understand why other units last 20 years, while theirs lasts from 5 to 10 years.

4. A drip pan could be placed directly under the ACoil which would allow any condensation which did occur to be safely routed out of the home without damaging either your floors, walls, or appliances.

Can you see now why the design has remained the same over the years? You can go to the following links to see other people who have experienced the same problems with water leaking, electrical shorts, damaged heaters, damaged floors, mold and other fun things like these.

(Read from the first post. Dirty coils? Probably because of the air filtration system, or rather the lack thereof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Someone fed this guy the same line about lack of Freon that the mobile home dealer's guy gave me!)

The problem is not a lack of freon. It is not an incorrect blower motor. It is not (usually) because of a failure to maintain the unit properly. The problem is a faulty design, made worse by the two metal air filters which Nordyne says you should use on your ACoil. YOU should NOT have to pay for someone elses BAD DESIGN. Send an email to: bishops@nordyne.com and tell them what you think!

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
